Furniture Buying: Part 2 - How to Measure

Here are my tips on how to get measurements right

Okay, now that we know our new pieces will fit through the door… will it fit in the room?

This is a question that goes through every furniture buyer's mind after they receive their delivery, but looks aren't everything. While it might look perfect in the showroom or warehouse, how will it look in your home?

Once you've narrowed down your options (and taken pictures of your space) here is a quick checklist you can use to make sure your new furniture is going to be a good fit and still look great. The most important thing to remember when measuring is to measure the length from the room's entrance to the far wall.

Here are my tips on how to get measurement right:

MEASURE YOUR ROOM

  • First, measure the door that you will be using to bring the furniture into the room. As learned above, measure the height, width, and diagonal from top left to bottom right. Make sure to get the measurements for inside the door frames too. This can be tricky but it's critical when you start trying to fit pieces of furniture in the room.

  • Measure the length from the entrance of the room to the far wall. You need this measurement to know if you will be able to bring the furniture into the room and be able to maneuver it easily into place. (see pic above for reference).

  • Measure the length and width of the room.

  • Measure the height of the walls.

  • Measure all doorways, windows, radiators, fireplaces, or other architectural features.

  • It is also essential to measure the height from the floor to the bottom and top of the window.

  • Take note of all electrical outlets, vents, ceiling fixtures, fans

  • Sketch the room measurements on a piece of paper for a visual.

Hopefully, you've found this guide helpful for measuring your furniture pieces so that you can see if they'll fit into the spaces in which you want to put them.

There are many other things to consider besides width and depth when looking for furniture, so always measure those before making a purchase!
